Meet your local host

Dominican escape creator, based in Bayahibe

I discovered the Dominican Republic from the sea, then fell in love with it through its lands, villages and people. It's this complete island that I love to share with others.

Joy

From La Rochelle originally, Joy discovered the Dominican Republic during a gap year dedicated to scuba diving. Her connection with the island was first forged underwater, then deepened on land, through meetings, roads, wild beaches and villages that she has explored with curiosity ever since. A former excursion guide, Joy knows the many facets of the country: Caribbean coastline, mountains, hidden gems, charming hotels, carefully selected restaurants and more local experiences. She enjoys building personalized trips, tailored to each traveler's wishes, whether it's gentle adventure, nature, Dominican culture or seaside relaxation. Her approach combines comfort, attentiveness and hands-on knowledge of the ground, with a desire to reveal a Dominican Republic that is richer, more nuanced and more intimate than classic postcard images.

Everything you need to know about Dominican Republic

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit the Dominican Republic?

The island can be visited year-round, but each season has its own character. From December to April, the air is dry, the sea turquoise, and temperatures hover around 28°C: this is the ideal period to explore the south coast, sail to Saona, or hike in the Central Cordillera. From June to November, the climate becomes more humid, with tropical showers often brief in late afternoon; the landscapes then take on a rare green intensity, and rates become more favorable. January and February remain our favorite months to observe humpback whales in Samaná Bay. To travel to the Dominican Republic without constraints, it's best to avoid September, which is more exposed to cyclones.

What budget should you plan for a trip to the Dominican Republic?

The budget for a trip to the Dominican Republic varies depending on how you choose to explore the island. Outside major all-inclusive resorts, expect an average of €1,800 to €2,500 per person for two weeks, flights included, while staying in charming hotels, ecolodges, or guesthouses run by Dominicans. Private transfers, English-speaking guides, and boat excursions to Bayahibe or Las Galeras often represent the largest expense. Local cuisine, meanwhile, remains very affordable: a good meal of grilled fish on the beach rarely exceeds €15. Depending on the pace and comfort level you prefer, a circuit in the Dominican Republic can be tailored to many different profiles.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in the Dominican Republic?

Booking with a local agency in the Dominican Republic means bypassing the standardized itineraries found everywhere, and benefiting from genuinely insider knowledge. Based in Bayahibe since 2010, Joy and Bernard travel the island year-round to scout the best addresses, vet guides, and build direct relationships with hoteliers and fishermen who accompany our travelers. This on-the-ground presence changes everything: we can adapt a program in just a few hours, detour to a waterfall off the beaten path, or slip in an unexpected meeting with a cacao producer. By booking with Tropical Évasion, you also enjoy a secure framework in France: payment in euros, APST guarantee, and protection of deposited funds.

What to see on a trip through the Dominican Republic?

The island is far vaster than one might imagine, and it would be a shame to reduce it to its beaches. To the southeast, Bayahibe opens the way to the East National Park and Saona Island, ideal for a day on the water in shallow seas. Further west, Santo Domingo and its Colonial Zone tell five centuries of history, from America's first cobbled streets to the bustling Mercado Modelo markets. The Samaná Peninsula seduces with its secluded beaches like Rincón, the waterfalls of El Limón, and in winter, the whale ballet. Inland, Jarabacoa and Constanza reveal a mountainous, cool, agricultural República Dominicana, worlds away from postcard stereotypes.
