You've booked your flight to the Dominican Republic, but one question lingers: will your passport be enough to enter this tropical paradise? Or perhaps you're wondering what paperwork you need to handle to make this adventure stress-free? Don't worry! We're taking you on an administrative journey where entry requirements will hold no secrets.
Dominican Republic Visa: Who Needs One?
Short stay (less than 3 months)
If you're staying in the Dominican Republic for 3 months or less, citizens of France and several other countries (Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Luxembourg, etc.) do not need a visa. A valid passport is sufficient to enter the territory, provided it remains valid for the entire duration of your stay.
Long stay (more than 3 months)
For a stay exceeding 3 months or if you plan to settle in the country, a visa is necessary. This visa must match the nature of your stay (work, studies, permanent residence, etc.). Without an appropriate visa, it will be impossible to regularize your situation once you're there.
Mandatory Electronic Form: What You Need to Know
A form to complete before departure
All travelers must complete an electronic form before departing for the Dominican Republic. This form consolidates former health requirements, customs declarations, and embarkation/disembarkation procedures. It is mandatory for all travelers, including Dominican nationals.
QR Code: Your Gateway to Entry and Exit
The form generates a QR code, which must be presented upon entry and exit from the country. Without this QR code, you cannot board or leave the island. Each traveler must complete the form individually. If you're traveling with children, their names must be listed under one of the parents' names on the form.
Passport and Other Essential Documents
Valid passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date. However, until November 30, 2025, a passport valid only for the duration of your stay will be sufficient for tourist travel.
Health insurance
Obtain health insurance that covers medical expenses such as hospitalization, surgery, medical evacuation, and more. Without this coverage, you risk being unable to access medical care, even in life-threatening emergencies.
Exit authorization for minors
If a minor travels alone or with someone without parental authority, an exit authorization is required. This authorization must be provided by the parents or legal guardian.
Document copies
It is recommended to keep paper copies of your important documents or digitize them and send them to your email address for easy access.
Travel Taxes: What's Changed
Entry and exit tax
Previously, travelers had to pay separately for an entry tax of 10 USD for the tourist card and an exit tax of 20 USD. Today, these taxes are included in the price of your airline ticket. This simplifies the process.
Covid Test on Arrival
Random rapid test
No Covid test is required at check-in, but a random rapid test may be conducted upon your arrival in the Dominican Republic. Children under 7 years old are exempt, as are passengers with a vaccination certificate or a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours before arrival.
Obtaining Your QR Code e-Ticket
The importance of the QR Code
All travelers, whether they need a visa or not, must obtain a QR Code e-Ticket before departure. This code is mandatory for both entry and exit from the country. It can be obtained online on the official website of the Dominican ministries.
