No worries: whether you're planning a beach getaway, a nature escape, or a cultural exploration, we help you identify the best season to travel based on climate. Here's everything you need to know to organize your trip well, region by region.
The Climate of the Dominican Republic by Region
The Dominican climate is predominantly tropical, influenced by terrain and altitude. Temperature drops by approximately 0.6 °C every 100 meters of elevation, while precipitation increases.
The Central Cordillera plays a major role in the country's climate diversity. It divides regions and influences exposure to winds, rainfall, and temperatures. For example, the southwest, sheltered by mountains, experiences a hot semi-arid climate, while other regions benefit from an equatorial or tropical climate.
Two Main Climate Types:
- Equatorial climate: No true dry season. Primarily found in the northeast, around Samaná and the northern coast.
- Alternating tropical climate: A dry season (in winter) and a wet season (in summer). In the northwest (Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata...), the dry season is reversed and occurs from June to September, with marked rainfall in November and December.
Extreme Weather Phenomena
The hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, with a peak between early and mid-September. Although these events remain rare, they can also occur in May or December. The rest of the year is generally very favorable for travel.
