Have you ever found yourself in Punta Cana, unable to share a sunset photo due to an unreliable connection? Or perhaps you tried to make an important call from a rural area, only to be cut off by non-existent network coverage?

Have you ever found yourself in Punta Cana, unable to share a sunset photo due to an unreliable connection? Or perhaps you tried to make an important call from a rural area, only to be cut off by non-existent network coverage?

In the Dominican Republic, connectivity is generally good in major cities and tourist beaches. But as soon as you venture away from these areas, it's not uncommon to encounter zones where internet slows dramatically or disappears altogether. This can complicate a simple hotel reservation or a conversation with loved ones.

So what should you really expect once you arrive? How can you enjoy a reliable connection depending on where you are? Let's break it down.

Landline Options in the Dominican Republic

Obtaining a landline in the Dominican Republic is straightforward and affordable. Keep in mind, however, that not all parts of the country are covered by the necessary cable network. Like everywhere else, landlines are becoming less important, and most people now opt for mobile phones.

Claro, formerly Verizon, is the main landline provider. It remains the leader in mobile telephony and internet services as well. If you're looking for a package combining landline, internet, mobile, and television, Claro is your best option.

Mobile Operators in the Dominican Republic

Three main operators provide mobile services in the Dominican Republic: Claro, the market leader, Altice (formerly Orange & Tricom), and Viva.

To obtain a mobile phone, follow the same procedure as for a landline. Keep in mind that most contracts run for 18 months and you'll need to provide a valid ID. Some companies also require a cedula (Dominican identity card) and resident status to subscribe.

You can switch operators thanks to number portability. Before choosing your provider, verify network quality in your area, as mobile coverage varies by region and operator.

6 Solutions to Stay Connected in the Dominican Republic

eSIM for the Dominican Republic

Heading to the Caribbean sun soon and want to stay connected effortlessly?

With eSIM, everything happens in just a few minutes before you leave—no need to physically swap SIM cards. Simply scan a QR code and your phone is ready upon arrival.

Most iPhones (XS model and later) and recent Samsung devices (S20 and up) are compatible.

Budget-wise, plans vary based on your needs: between €12 and €47 for 1 to 5 GB of data. For unlimited connectivity, expect around €35 for a week or €55 for two weeks.

Advantages of eSIM:

  • Rapid activation before your trip
  • Immediate connection upon landing
  • Automatic selection of the best local network

Before leaving, check that your phone is eSIM-compatible. This takes just a few clicks and will save you from any unpleasant surprises.

Local SIM Card

A local SIM card is another simple and convenient solution to stay connected. Three operators dominate the market: Claro, Altice, and Viva.

Visit a shop with your ID—either directly at the airport or in town. Within minutes, your phone is ready to use internet at the best rates.

Each operator offers attractive options depending on your needs:

  • Claro: approximately €3.85 for 1 GB valid for 15 days
  • Altice: approximately €2.10 for 5 GB over 5 days
  • Viva: approximately €2.25 for 7 GB over 7 days

Advantages:

  • Rates are very affordable
  • You can also make local calls without breaking the bank

Roaming

Roaming can also work in a pinch. However, it's an expensive solution. Using your home plan abroad can quickly inflate your bill.

Your plan works internationally, but every call, message, and megabyte of data is charged separately. Just a few minutes online or a handful of photos sent is enough to drive up your costs.

What can you expect?

  • Mobile internet: between €10 and €13 per megabyte
  • Outgoing calls: between €2 and €3 per minute
  • Outgoing SMS: between €0.50 and €1 per message

To avoid unpleasant surprises, disable mobile data as soon as you arrive. Enable it only in case of urgent need and use the WiFi available at your accommodation or in public spaces for your daily needs.

Pocket WiFi

Pocket WiFi is also a simple and effective solution. This small portable device creates a private network and can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously. Handy for sharing your day's photos, sending messages, or keeping the kids entertained during trips.

Reservation is done online before you depart. You can then pick up your Pocket WiFi at the airport or have it delivered straight to your hotel. Once in hand, simply power it on to connect all your devices.

Budget-wise, plan for around €10 per day for 1 to 2 GB of data, with additional fees of approximately €30 for delivery and insurance.

Advantages:

  • One connection for the whole family or group
  • Secure internet access wherever you go

Remember to reserve your Pocket WiFi at least a week before departure. This guarantees stress-free delivery to your chosen location.

International Passes

Want to keep your local number during your stay?

Major carriers offer practical options to stay reachable in the Dominican Republic. Perfect if you need to answer work calls or simply stay in touch with loved ones.

Simply activate an international pass before departure. Once there, use your phone as you would at home, without changing anything.

Here's what carriers typically offer:

  • Major carrier – Escape Pass 1: 10 GB + 30 minutes of calls + 50 SMS, or 2 hours of calls + 50 SMS for €29.99
  • Alternative carrier – South America Stay Package: 60 minutes of calls, 60 SMS, and 5 GB for €35
  • Third carrier – World Pass: 3 GB for €30
  • Budget carrier – No travel pass: €9.70 per MB used

Advantages:

  • You keep your regular number
  • You stay easily reachable, both at home and abroad

Remember to activate your pass at least 24 hours before departure for worry-free travel.

Free WiFi

Free WiFi is a simple and practical solution to stay connected during your stay. You'll find it easily in most hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers in tourist areas.

To do this, look for networks offered by these establishments, connect, and enjoy internet at no cost. It's perfect for checking messages, reviewing emails, or making a quick update.

Advantages:

  • Easy access with no extra charges
  • Ideal for occasional use without eating into your plan

Prefer WiFi networks from quality hotels or restaurants, which are often more stable and better secured.

Avoid entering sensitive information on unsecured public networks.
