Dreaming of capturing the sunset at Las Terrenas with your smartphone? Or charging your portable speaker to enjoy your playlist on the beach? In the Dominican Republic, electrical outlets and voltage are different from Europe. To stay connected, it's best to know what to expect. Here's what you need to know about electricity and outlet types before you go.
Voltage
In the Dominican Republic, the electrical voltage is 110 volts with a frequency of 60 Hz. If you're bringing European appliances, check that they're compatible with this voltage. Otherwise, you'll need a voltage transformer in addition to a plug adapter to make them work properly.
Electrical Outlets
In the Dominican Republic, you'll find two types of outlets:
- Type A: two flat pins, without grounding
- Type B: two flat pins + one round pin for grounding
Both types operate at 110 to 127 volts with a current of 15 A. Remember to pack an adapter if your appliances don't have this format.
Do You Need a Plug Adapter in the Dominican Republic?
Here, outlets can be different from those you use at home. To avoid surprises, check before you leave whether you'll need an adapter. Without one, you might find yourself unable to charge your phone or use your appliances.
Do You Need a Voltage Converter or Transformer?
Before plugging in an appliance, take a moment to check the voltage specifications marked on it.
If the appliance is compatible with both 110V and 220V voltages (called "dual voltage"), no transformer is necessary. This is often the case with phones, laptops, and other modern devices. But it's worth checking the label or charger to be sure.
When in doubt, don't plug in your device. Using an appliance not suited to the local voltage can damage it or pose a risk. Exercise extra caution with more powerful appliances like hair dryers.
