Las Galeras
Las Galeras
At the tip of the Samaná Peninsula, Las Galeras retains the soul of a fishing village facing some of the country's most beautiful beaches.
Located about thirty minutes' drive from Samaná, the village of Las Galeras stretches along a tree-lined beach, far from the beaten path. You'll find a few houses nestled beneath palm trees, expanses of fine sand, and fishing boats gliding peacefully across the lagoon. At mealtimes, small local counters invite you to savor fish prepared according to Dominican recipes.
A look at this authentic village.
The Story Behind the Name
The name Las Galeras dates back to the 16th century, commemorating two Spanish galleys that once anchored in these waters.
Las Galeras in a Nutshell
Las Galeras sits at the northeastern tip of the Samaná Peninsula, in a region still largely untouched by mass tourism. Nestled between Cabrón and Samaná capes, this coastal village captivates with its peaceful atmosphere and authentic character. Between turquoise waters and palm trees, it preserves a genuine Dominican identity, defined by colorful houses, fishing boats, and quiet streets.
Here you'll discover tranquil beaches, red-earth trails cutting through rolling countryside, and scenes of local life animated by the sounds of bachata and merengue.
What to Do in Las Galeras?
Beach Relaxation
From Las Galeras village, several beaches are easily accessible on foot, by boat, or moto-taxi. Often cited among the country's finest, Playa Rincón captivates with its stretch of sand and natural surroundings. Others like Playa Frontón, Madama, La Playita, and El Valle offer varied atmospheres—wilder or calmer depending on location. At the village's edge, Playa Grande is rockier and more turbulent, unsuitable for swimming, but pleasant for enjoying the view. For a few dollars, you can rent a lounge chair and settle in facing the ocean.
Taste Dominican Cuisine at Restaurant Las Galeras
To savor simple, generous Dominican fare, take the paved road climbing from Las Galeras beach. In under ten minutes, you'll reach Restaurante Las Galeras. It's a small establishment run by a local family. You'll find traditional dishes prepared on-site in a convivial atmosphere. The place is appreciated for the freshness of its ingredients and authentic recipes. It's a fine opportunity to experience local cuisine in a calm setting, away from crowded spots. Don't hesitate to stop for lunch or dinner.
Surfing at Playa El Valle
About 45 minutes' drive from Las Galeras, Playa El Valle welcomes you in a pristine environment, ideal for those wanting to surf away from crowded beaches. If you're a beginner, you can book a session with the Pirata surf school. Based in Punta Cana, it offers lessons on demand and travels specifically to El Valle. Book ahead to secure your session. Whether you're on the board or simply seeking a peaceful spot, this beach offers a fine escape from traditional circuits.
Embark on an Excursion
Although Las Galeras is perfect for relaxation, you'll find several excursions here to discover the region differently. Strolling along the beach or up the main street, you'll easily encounter local guides offering organized outings. Here are three activities to consider during your stay:
- Playa Ermitaño and Puerto Escondido
Reach by boat two beaches accessible only by sea. Isolated and peaceful, Playa Ermitaño offers a setting perfect for relaxation and swimming. At Puerto Escondido, crystal-clear waters harbor numerous tropical fish, ideal for snorkeling.
- Fishing Outing with Local Residents
Set out to sea with village fishermen for a half-day of traditional fishing. Upon return, you can prepare and share your catch directly on the beach.
- Los Haitises National Park and Caño Hondo Waterfall
Explore this protected park by boat, visit caves decorated with Taíno petroglyphs, then traverse dense mangrove before reaching Caño Hondo. You can swim here in freshwater surrounded by spectacular natural scenery.
Diving
This dream destination serves as an ideal base for reaching some of the finest diving sites in the Dominican Republic. Several local centers, including Las Galeras Divers, outfit you to explore rich and varied coral reefs. As you dive, you may encounter remarkable marine life.
From January to April, don't miss the chance to observe humpback whales during excursions specially organized to celebrate their passage through Samaná Bay.
Cycling
To explore the Samaná Peninsula differently, rent a bicycle and travel at your own pace along the paved road connecting Las Galeras to neighboring mountains. You can also opt for a guided ride, with no time constraints, to reach the most picturesque spots. As you pedal, you'll pass through rows of coconut palms and enjoy flat stretches where riding flows freely. Stationed near the beach and in the village center, several rental stands offer a variety of models at reasonable rates.
From Santo Domingo airport, allow about 4 hours' drive to reach Las Galeras. If you land in Punta Cana, you'll first need to reach Santo Domingo before continuing northeast—a total journey of 5.5 to 7 hours depending on transportation used.
Once there, from Samaná, you can catch a guagua (local minibus) from the central market. For a more direct route, moto-conchos (motorcycle taxis) also run service to the village.
