A Brief History

The village was founded in 1835 by Zephaniah Kingsley, a merchant who settled with his mixed-race family and 53 formerly enslaved people he had freed in Florida. At that time, the island was administered by Jean-Pierre Boyer. Later, Kingsley brought a further hundred enslaved people to the settlement. His wife, Anna Kingsley, lived in a beachfront house near the port. Even today, some descendants of the Kingsley family and the formerly enslaved settlers continue to live in the region.
